Holding something in mind
Remembering a word or a pattern for a moment while you use it. Little Roos has 5 free games that practise it, for ages 3-8.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- EYLF 4.2 (Early Years Learning Framework V2.0): Children develop a range of learning and thinking skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating.
Games that practise it
- Spelling Bee: Putting letters in order until they make a word. Ages 5-8.
- Pelican's Patterns: Patterns: spotting what repeats, and working out what comes next. Ages 3-6.
- Dugong Remembers: Remembering things in order: watch and listen, then do it back. Ages 3-6.
- Whipbird's Whistle: Copying a rhythm: a long whistle, a short crack, played back in order. Ages 3-6.
- Kookaburra Takes Turns: Taking turns, with a grown-up or with Kookaburra: turn over two cards, then pass it over. Ages 3-6.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Fridge words (from Spelling Bee)
- Pick a short word from the game, like sun.
- Say it slowly together: s … u … n.
- Make it with fridge letters, bottle caps with letters on, or letters written on paper.
Pattern train (from Pelican's Patterns)
- Line up spoons and forks: spoon, fork, spoon, fork.
- Ask what comes next.
- Make a pattern for your child to finish, then let them make one for you.
Things to ask while they play
- What sound does this word start with?
- What sound comes next?
- Can you say the pattern out loud?
- Which part keeps repeating?
More skills in Attention and self-control, or every skill.
