Privacy in the Little Roos app
We don't know who you are, we don't know who your child is, and the app keeps it that way.
The short version
- There are no accounts. The app never asks for a name, an age, an email or anything else about a child.
- There is no advertising, no analytics and no tracking of any kind. No outside company's code in the app collects anything.
- Nothing about how your child plays is sent anywhere. The app works with no internet at all, from the first time it opens.
- Everything the app remembers stays on this device. Another device starts fresh, unless you move a save file there yourself.
What the app keeps on this device
All of this stays in the app's own space on this device. None of it is ever sent to us or anyone else.
- What's been played: which games and books have been opened, and how many rounds on which days (the last four weeks), so each game starts at the right level and the home page can suggest what's next. There's no score, and nothing is compared with anyone.
- What your child makes: pictures, songs, stories, nature hunt cards, word treasure, the animals met, and how the child in the body tours looks (three small numbers, never a photo).
- Settings: sound, the Ways to play, the time limit, Talk-only mode, the 3D light mode, and the grown-ups' choices.
- How am I feeling? isn't kept at all. The check-in only answers the face your child taps.
- Problem report: if something goes wrong, the app notes it on this device. It's only ever sent if you copy it into an email yourself.
Deleting the app deletes all of it. If this device backs itself up to your own account (iCloud, or your Google account on Android), that backup includes the app's things, as it does for any app; it stays in your account.
Talk
Talk keeps more on the device, because a family makes the board their own. All of it stays on this device:
- the board's settings, and the words, topics and hidden words a grown-up changes;
- photos a grown-up adds to a word (from the camera or the photo library, only after the device asks permission);
- voice recordings a grown-up makes (the microphone is only used while a grown-up records, and only after the device asks permission);
- voices made for new words. They're made on the device itself, so what a family types is never sent to a voice service.
The message a child builds is never recorded or kept. A Talk backup is a file a grown-up chooses to save; where it goes after that is up to them.
Save files
A grown-up can save a copy of the child's play as a .littleroos file, to carry it to another device or to littleroos.com. The app only makes or reads that file when a grown-up asks it to, and never sends it anywhere.
Buying the app
The free taster and Talk need nothing from you. If a grown-up unlocks everything, the purchase is made with the app store (Apple, Google or Microsoft) on their own payment screen. The store tells the app the unlock is paid for, so it can open everything. We never see your card, your name or your email from a purchase. The store sends us sales totals, never anything about your child.
If you email us a receipt to get a code for another store, we use it only to check the purchase and send the code. We keep a scrambled copy of the order number so a receipt can't be used twice, and we delete the email within 30 days.
Crash reports and the stores
The app doesn't send crash reports. Apple and Google may pass us anonymous crash reports from people who chose to share them in their device's settings; they don't say who you are. The stores also show us download numbers and reviews.
The internet
The app works offline. It goes online only:
- when a grown-up buys, restores or redeems the unlock (the store's own screen does this);
- when a grown-up, behind the parental gate, chooses to open littleroos.com or a store page in the device's browser. The app asks first, every time.
The 3D tours run on a small server inside the app that only this device can reach. It loads the app's own files and nothing from the internet.
Children
The app is made for children, which is exactly why it collects nothing from them. There's no way for a child to give us any personal information, because nothing in the app asks for any. Everything for grown-ups, including buying, links out and settings, is behind a parental gate.
We've written this against the Australian Privacy Principles and the US children's privacy law (COPPA), and we'll check it against Australia's Children's Online Privacy Code when it's registered.
Asking us anything
If you want to know anything at all about this, write to roo@littleroos.com.au and a real person will answer. If you email us, we use your address only to reply to you, and we don't add it to any list. Little Roos is made by Film Me Pty Ltd, ABN 57 612 132 395, New South Wales, Australia.
littleroos.com, the website, has its own privacy page. It's free, and always will be.
