Shapes
Naming and sorting circles, squares, triangles and stars. Little Roos has 4 free games that practise it, for ages 3-7.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- AC9MFSP01 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Foundation): sort, name and create familiar shapes; recognise and describe familiar shapes within objects in the environment, giving reasons.
Games that practise it
- A Shape in its Place: Telling shapes apart. Ages 3-6.
- Pelican's Patterns: Patterns: spotting what repeats, and working out what comes next. Ages 3-6.
- Gecko's Mirror: Symmetry: finish the other half so both sides match. Ages 4-7.
- Ibis's Big Tidy-Up: Sorting by two things at once: colour and shape, size and shape. Ages 4-7.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Shape spotting (from A Shape in its Place)
- Walk round a room or the garden together.
- Find a circle (a plate), a square (a window pane), a triangle (a sandwich cut corner to corner).
- Draw one of each with a finger in the air.
Pattern train (from Pelican's Patterns)
- Line up spoons and forks: spoon, fork, spoon, fork.
- Ask what comes next.
- Make a pattern for your child to finish, then let them make one for you.
Things to ask while they play
- How many corners does this shape have?
- Is this one round, or pointy?
- Can you say the pattern out loud?
- Which part keeps repeating?
