Colours
Noticing and matching colours. Little Roos has 4 free games, tours and things to make that practise it, for ages 3-8.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- EYLF 4.2 (Early Years Learning Framework V2.0): Children develop a range of learning and thinking skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating.
Games that practise it
- Stroopy: Paying attention when the word and the colour disagree. Ages 6-8.
- A Match for the Patch: Finding two colours that are the same. Ages 3-6.
- Ibis's Big Tidy-Up: Sorting by two things at once: colour and shape, size and shape. Ages 4-7.
- Draw and Colour: Something to make.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Opposite day (from Stroopy)
- Give simple actions: "Touch your head."
- The rule is to do the opposite: touch your toes.
- Swap who gives the actions. Go slowly, then a bit faster.
Sock pairs (from A Match for the Patch)
- Tip a basket of clean socks onto the floor.
- Find the pairs together.
- Talk about how you know: the same colour, the same stripes, the same size.
Things to ask while they play
- What colour can you see, not what does the word say?
- Is it easier to go fast or slow?
- Which one is the same as this one?
- How do you know they match?
More skills in Shapes, colours and patterns, or every skill.
