Seeing how many
Knowing how many without counting, using ten-frames. Little Roos has 2 free games that practise it, for ages 3-7.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- AC9MFN02 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Foundation): recognise and name the number of objects within a collection up to 5 using subitising.
- AC9MFN04 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Foundation): partition and combine collections up to 10 using part-part-whole relationships and subitising to recognise and name the parts.
Games that practise it
- Ten in the Den: Making ten, by finding the two numbers that fill the frame. Ages 4-7.
- The Big Summer Scene: Counting out a number of things, and where they go: in, on, up. Ages 3-5.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Egg-carton ten (from Ten in the Den)
- Cut two cups off a dozen egg carton so it has ten.
- Put some pegs or big pasta shells in it.
- How many more to fill it? Count the empty cups together.
Bath-time counting (from The Big Summer Scene)
- Gather a few bath toys or spoons.
- Ask for a number in a place: "Put three in the water!" Count each one out loud as it goes in.
- Swap: your child asks, and you count (get it wrong now and then, so they can fix it).
Things to ask while they play
- How many dots are on this card?
- How many empty spaces are left in the frame?
- How many are in the water now?
- If one more climbs the tree, how many will be up there?
More skills in Numbers, or every skill.
