Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- AC9MFA01 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Foundation): recognise, copy and continue repeating patterns represented in different ways.
- AC9M1A02 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Year 1): recognise, continue and create repeating patterns with numbers, symbols, shapes and objects, identifying the repeating unit.
- EYLF 5.4 (Early Years Learning Framework V2.0): Children begin to understand how symbols and pattern systems work.

- Line up spoons and forks: spoon, fork, spoon, fork.
- Ask what comes next.
- Make a pattern for your child to finish, then let them make one for you.
Things to ask while they play
- Can you say the pattern out loud?
- Which part keeps repeating?
