Noticing what's the same
Looking closely to find two that match. Little Roos has 2 free games that practise it, for ages 3-6.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- EYLF 4.2 (Early Years Learning Framework V2.0): Children develop a range of learning and thinking skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating.
Games that practise it
- A Match for the Patch: Finding two colours that are the same. Ages 3-6.
- Snake's Long and Short: Comparing lengths: which ribbons are long, and which are short?. Ages 3-5.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Sock pairs (from A Match for the Patch)
- Tip a basket of clean socks onto the floor.
- Find the pairs together.
- Talk about how you know: the same colour, the same stripes, the same size.
Longer than me? (from Snake's Long and Short)
- Lie down on the floor and put a sock at your child's head and feet.
- Find things around the house: is each one longer or shorter than the gap between the socks?
- Line up three things from shortest to longest.
Things to ask while they play
- Which one is the same as this one?
- How do you know they match?
- Which one is longer? How can you tell?
- Can you find something shorter than your hand?
More skills in Shapes, colours and patterns, or every skill.
