Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- AC9MFN04 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Foundation): partition and combine collections up to 10 using part-part-whole relationships and subitising to recognise and name the parts.
- AC9M1N04 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Year 1): add and subtract numbers within 20, using physical and virtual materials, part-part-whole knowledge to 10 and a variety of calculation strategies.

Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Egg-carton ten (from Ten in the Den)
- Cut two cups off a dozen egg carton so it has ten.
- Put some pegs or big pasta shells in it.
- How many more to fill it? Count the empty cups together.
