Naming feelings
Knowing and naming how you feel. Little Roos has 4 free games, tours and things to make that practise it, for ages 3-7.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- AC9HPFP03 (Australian Curriculum v9: Health and Physical Education, Foundation): express and describe emotions they experience.
- EYLF 1 (Early Years Learning Framework V2.0): Children have a strong sense of identity (including an increasing capacity for self-regulation).
- EYLF 3 (Early Years Learning Framework V2.0): Children have a strong sense of wellbeing.
Games that practise it
- Koala's Calm-Down: Calming down with slow breathing, then naming how you feel. Ages 3-7.
- Platypus Feels: Reading feelings in faces and in moments: happy and sad, calm and angry, excited and tired, scared and cosy. Ages 3-6.
- How am I feeling?: Something to make.
- Feelings and friends stories: Something to make.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Teddy breathing (from Koala's Calm-Down)
- Lie down with a teddy or a soft toy on your tummy.
- Breathe in slowly and watch the teddy go up.
- Breathe out slowly and watch it go down. Do five together.
Feelings faces in the mirror (from Platypus Feels)
- Sit in front of a mirror together and take turns pulling a face: happy, sad, angry, scared, calm.
- Guess each other's feeling, and say one thing that might make someone feel that way.
- Finish with a calm face and three slow breaths together.
Things to ask while they play
- How does your body feel after breathing slowly?
- What might make you feel that way?
- What made you feel happy today?
- What does your face do when you feel cross?
