Machines & Vehicles
Sort road trains, ferries and hot-air balloons into land, sea and sky, find out what each machine does, build a truck step by step, and guess who's beeping.
Beep beep! Let's look at machines!
For grown-ups: what each one teaches
- Land, Sea or Sky? (ages 3–6). Sorting vehicles by where they go: on the land, on the sea or in the sky.
- What Does It Do? (ages 3–6). What machines do: the digger digs, the crane lifts, the tractor pulls, the cement mixer turns.
- Build a Truck (ages 4–7). Putting steps in order: build a truck from its wheels up, and bin day from start to finish.
- Beep Beep, Who's That? (ages 2–5). Listening: hear a vehicle's sound, and find the vehicle that made it.
- Bigger Than a Digger (ages 5–8). Which numbers are bigger and which are smaller.
Away from the screen
On a walk, hold a grown-up's hand and look for machines: how many trucks, buses and bikes can you count? Wave at the trucks from the footpath, and listen for a beep or a siren.
Every fact, and where it comes from
Everything Ruby Roo says in these games was checked against the page it links to, written for grown-ups to read.
- Hold your child's hand on the footpath, in the car park and when crossing the road, until they are at least eight. (Transport for NSW)
- Children should always wear a helmet when riding a bike or wheeled toy. (NSW Department of Education)
- A road train is a prime mover towing two or more trailers, allowed on set routes, mostly in remote Australia. (National Heavy Vehicle Regulator)
- A burner heats the air inside the balloon; hot air is lighter than the cooler air around it, so the balloon rises. (Britannica Kids)
- Helicopters can take off and land vertically, move in any direction, or hover in one place. (Encyclopaedia Britannica)
- A crane is a machine that lifts and moves heavy objects. (Encyclopaedia Britannica)
- A bulldozer is a powerful machine with a steel blade at the front, for pushing earth or rocks. (Encyclopaedia Britannica)
What it practises
- Sorting by two things. Putting things into groups by what they look like, then by two things at once: orange and round, small and pointy.
