Waterfall
Spotting a letter quickly, under the gentlest kind of time pressure · ages 4-7
1. Warm-up, 5 minutes
Choose the letter of the day. Say its sound together, trace it in the air, and ask everyone to find one on the walls of the room.
2. The game, on the projector
The class calls "Catch!" when the right letter falls, and a helper catches it. Swap helpers after every three letters.
Projector mode is the game with ?projector on the end of its address. It's big and landscape, a win waits for you to press Next, and nothing is saved on the computer: no progress, no animal cards, no login.
3. Away from the screen
Each child gets a strip of newspaper headline and a crayon, and circles every one of the day's letter they can find.
Questions to ask
- Which letter are you catching this time?
- How did you know that one wasn't a d?
- Which box are you going to put it in?
Curriculum
- AC9EFLY11: recognise and name all upper- and lower-case letters (graphs) and know the most common sound that each letter represents
- EYLF 5.4: Children begin to understand how symbols and pattern systems work
