Gecko's Mirror
Symmetry: finish the other half so both sides match · ages 4-7
1. Warm-up, 5 minutes
Mirror me: pairs face each other; one moves slowly, the other copies like a mirror. Swap.
2. The game, on the projector
Put a picture on the board. Children point to where the next square goes on the other side, and a helper taps it. Count the squares from the line together.
Projector mode is the game with ?projector on the end of its address. It's big and landscape, a win waits for you to press Next, and nothing is saved on the computer: no progress, no animal cards, no login.
3. Away from the screen
Fold-and-paint butterflies, then the Gecko's Mirror sheet: colour the missing half of each picture.
Questions to ask
- Which side was already drawn? How did you know where to tap?
- Can you find something at home where both sides match?
- Is your face the same on both sides?
Curriculum
- AC9M4SP03: recognise line and rotational symmetry of shapes and create symmetrical patterns and pictures, using dynamic geometric software where appropriate
- AC9MFSP01: sort, name and create familiar shapes; recognise and describe familiar shapes within objects in the environment, giving reasons
- EYLF 5.4: Children begin to understand how symbols and pattern systems work
