Symmetry
Making both sides of a picture match, as if in a mirror. (Symmetry is a Year 4 outcome; this is a gentle early start.) Little Roos has 2 free games, tours and things to make that practise it, for ages 4-7.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- AC9M4SP03 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Year 4): recognise line and rotational symmetry of shapes and create symmetrical patterns and pictures, using dynamic geometric software where appropriate.
- EYLF 5.4 (Early Years Learning Framework V2.0): Children begin to understand how symbols and pattern systems work.
Games that practise it
- Gecko's Mirror: Symmetry: finish the other half so both sides match. Ages 4-7.
- Draw and Colour: Something to make.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Paint blots and folds (from Gecko's Mirror)
- Fold a sheet of paper in half and open it again.
- Drop a few blobs of paint on one side only, close to the fold.
- Fold it shut, press it flat, and open it: both sides match! What does it look like?
Things to ask while they play
- Which side was already drawn? How did you know where to tap?
- Can you find something at home where both sides match?
More skills in Shapes, colours and patterns, or every skill.
