Building a sentence
Putting words in order so they make sense, and reading them back. Little Roos has 1 free game that practise it, for ages 4-7.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- AC9EFLA06 (Australian Curriculum v9: English, Foundation): recognise that sentences are made up of groups of words that work together in particular ways to make meaning.
- EYLF 5.4 (Early Years Learning Framework V2.0): Children begin to understand how symbols and pattern systems work.
Games that practise it
- Echidna's Sentences: Reading a sentence: put the words in order to match the picture. Ages 4-7.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Jumbled sentences (from Echidna's Sentences)
- Write a short sentence your child knows on a strip of paper: "The frog sat on the log."
- Cut it into words, mix them up, and build it back together.
- Read it together, pointing to each word. Then make a silly one: "The log sat on the frog!"
Things to ask while they play
- Which word comes first? How do you know?
- Where does the full stop go?
