Opposites
Knowing words in pairs that mean the opposite: big and small, up and down, in and out. Little Roos has 2 free games that practise it, for ages 3-6.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- AC9EFLA08 (Australian Curriculum v9: English, Foundation): recognise and develop awareness of vocabulary used in familiar contexts related to everyday experiences, personal interests and topics taught at school.
- AC9MFSP02 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Foundation): describe the position and location of themselves and objects in relation to other people and objects within a familiar space.
- AC9MFM01 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Foundation): identify and compare attributes of objects and events, including length, capacity, mass and duration, using direct comparisons and communicate reasoning.
Games that practise it
- Lorikeet's Opposites: Opposites: big and small, full and empty, up and down. Ages 3-6.
- Butterfly's Weather: Weather words, and what to wear: sunny and rainy, windy and calm, hot and cold. Ages 3-6.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Opposites all day (from Lorikeet's Opposites)
- Play opposites as you go: turn the light on, then off. Open the door, then shut it.
- Take turns: one of you says a word ("hot!"), the other says its opposite ("cold!").
- Act them out: make yourselves big, then small; fast, then slow; happy, then sad.
Dress the weather (from Butterfly's Weather)
- Look out of the window together: what's the weather like?
- Pick clothes for it from the cupboard: a hat and sunscreen for sun, a raincoat for rain, a jumper for cold.
- Try a silly one: what would you wear if it were snowing AND sunny?
Things to ask while they play
- What's the opposite of up?
- Can you find something big and something small in this room?
- What's the weather like right now?
- What would you wear on a windy day?
