Reading numbers
Knowing numerals and what they're called. Little Roos has 4 free games that practise it, for ages 3-8.
Where it fits
In the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 (birth to five) and the Australian Curriculum v9 (Foundation to Year 2), with the official wording:
- AC9MFN01 (Australian Curriculum v9: Mathematics, Foundation): name, represent and order numbers including zero to at least 20, using physical and virtual materials and numerals.
Games that practise it
- Count on Me: Reading a number and putting it where it belongs. Ages 3-6.
- Bigger Than a Digger: Which numbers are bigger and which are smaller. Ages 5-8.
- The Big Summer Scene: Counting out a number of things, and where they go: in, on, up. Ages 3-5.
- Wallaby Hops to 20: Numbers to 20 on a number line, and counting on: where will Wallaby land?. Ages 4-7.
Away from the screen
About two minutes each, with things most homes have.
Number pegs (from Count on Me)
- Write the numbers 1 to 5 on scraps of paper.
- Give your child a handful of pegs, spoons or blocks.
- Put the right number of things next to each number, and count them together.
Bigger or smaller? (from Bigger Than a Digger)
- Say a number between 1 and 10.
- Your child says whether it's bigger or smaller than 5, and shows it with a big stretch or a small crouch.
- Swap: they say a number, you stretch or crouch.
Things to ask while they play
- What number is this one?
- How many fingers can you show me for that number?
- Is this number bigger or smaller than the one on the patch?
- How do you know?
